No, you don't have to download KKS, you can bypass it by replacing some files, namely Assembly-CSharp. In this post you can find the necessary files.

You don't have to constantly replace files when you load scenes that were created based on KKS. Simply put, you can use both KK scenes and KKS. There shouldn't be any problems, at least I haven't encountered any.
As a last resort, you can always restore the original files.
